Boliden - Aitik Mine

As the UBC Mining Grad Class goes to the first open-pit mine, Boliden's Aitik was nothing short of phenomenal with its large steep open-pit, and large equipment fleet running Caterpillar 795 trucks with trolley assist capabilities. The overall tour was very informative as we really got to see the full mining value chain from drill and blast all the way to the tailings impoundment.

In the processing plant, we got to see the full flow sheet. It was really interesting to see that they used the spiral classifier instead of the hydrocyclone as the hydrocyclone is a more popular option in Canadian operations!

Fun Fact: The Autogenous mill pictured behind us is one of the largest in operation in the world at a diameter 11.5m and a length of 13.5m !!

Onwards to the world famous LKAB Kiruna mine tomorrow !
